The Art of Listening
The art of listening: a discussion and generative poetry experience
Presented by PoetTreeTown, featuring certified Listener Poet, Jessica Riggs.
Sunday, November 16th 3-4:30pm
Dzanc House
402 S. Huron St Ypsilanti, MI
This workshop is for anyone interested in deepening their listening and poem-making skills in a safe and gentle environment! Guided by experienced Listener Poet Jessica Riggs, we'll ask each other questions such as: why is listening important? when have you felt listened to? what does it feel like in the body to deeply listen? what is challenging about listening? how do you hold space for someone when they're sharing vulnerable material? Attendees will then have an opportunity to pair up, and practice sharing and listening to stories from their own life with each other, and then writing (or starting) short poems in response.
Sliding scale donations to Dzanc House and PoetTreeTown welcome. Suggested $10-15.
About Jessica Riggs: Jess is a certified Listener Poet, as part of The Good Listening Project, a nonprofit based in Washington, DC that believes good listening is healing. Listener poets hold “listening sessions” for people at hospitals, libraries, and other public spaces to share whatever is in the mind, with the belief that when thoughtful listeners hold space, people feel heard and understood, and the experience is often cathartic. After the listening session, the poet writes a custom poem based on the conversation that was exchanged.
