Drawing More (Level 2 class) week 6

Registration Required.

Drawing realistically from direct observation of the world around us. Suitable for near-beginners and beyond.

See supply list linked here.

6 weeks

10:00am-12:30pm on the following Sundays:

January 18, 25; February 1, 15, 22; March 1

Sliding-Scale Course Fee:

Actual Price - Financially Secure: $265

Middle Price - Doing Okay: $190

Lower Price - Struggling Financially: $120

In this 6-week course, you'll continue honing your skills at drawing realistically from direct observation of the world around us. We’ll practice drawing ordinary objects, still-life arrangements, rooms, plants, people, self-portraits, and maybe even outdoors (weather permitting). We’ll work in graphite pencil, charcoal, Conté, and chalk pastel.

Compared to a beginner drawing class, we’ll devote more energy to honing the skills you’ve already begun developing. We’ll make longer drawings and more-detailed drawings. We’ll explore more drawing media. We’ll practice seeing color and using it in various modes (e.g., expressive, realistic). And we’ll practice “challenging” subjects like people, hands, and portraits.

We’ll start with a basics refresher day, practicing line drawing and skills for seeing and drawing accurate proportions (e.g., pencil sighting, relative measuring), as well as a review of shading skills. After that, we’ll dive into new challenges!

This Drawing More course is suitable for a wide range of participants, from near-beginners with a little experience to folks who want to dust off their drawing skills and get back into practice!

Intro to Printmaking (8 week workshop)

Instructor: Lena Ellis-Boatman, M.F.A.

Price: $350 + supplies (supply list will be provided)

Dates: Thurs 6:00-8:30pm, Jan 8 - Feb 26 at Dzanc House

Ages: Adults and teens ages 14-17 with signed parental permission (tweens and younger teens are welcome to sign up with an adult who is also taking the course)

Learn the basics of relief, intaglio, and monotype printmaking in the cozy atmosphere of Dzanc House! Lena will support and guide you in creating and printing your own designs, plus you'll learn to use a printmaking press. In this 8-week course, we will do linocut, drypoint, collograph, and monotype printmaking.

We'll start with a simple relief (linoleum carving, or "linocut") project using black ink on white paper, and we'll branch out from there to include color inks, learn other printmaking processes, and explore your own unique ideas! Most tools will be provided for you to use during class, and you can borrow a lino carving tool to use at home.

This class is designed for beginners, but intermediate-level printmakers are welcome, too! Lena holds an M.F.A. degree in Printmaking, and xé has taught printmaking at all levels, including advanced courses at Michigan State University and College for Creative Studies. Xé loves helping students troubleshoot interesting projects and technical processes.

Have some prior experience with other types of printmaking? This class can support creating and printing woodcuts, Pronto/polyester plate lithos, and copper-plate drypoints - if you bring the tools and materials. We can print pre-existing etching/aquatint/mezzotint plates if you have them, but we don't have the capacity to etch new plates in this class. Press accommodates a maximum paper size of 12" x 24".

Please email Lena at lena@rhizomeartstudio.com with any questions about course content, projects, or supplies. For questions about registration or Dzanc House, please email info@dzanchouse.org. To learn more about Lena as an educator and artist, visit www.rhizomeartstudio.com

Signing up two or more people? Get $30 off your total!

Note: If you have a coupon for one of Lena's classes, please present your coupon on the first day of class for a rebate.
