Intro to Printmaking (8 weeks)

Dates: Thurs 6:00-8:30pm, Jan 8 - Feb 26 at Dzanc House
Ages: Adults and teens ages 14-17 with signed parental permission (tweens and younger teens are welcome to sign up with an adult who is also taking the course)
Learn the basics of relief, intaglio, and monotype printmaking in the cozy atmosphere of Dzanc House! Lena will support and guide you in creating and printing your own designs, plus you'll learn to use a printmaking press! In this 8-week course, we will do linocut, drypoint, collograph, and monotype printmaking.
We'll start with a simple relief (linoleum carving, or "linocut") project using black ink on white paper, and we'll branch out from there to include color inks, learn other printmaking processes, and explore your own unique ideas! Most tools will be provided for you to use during class, and you can borrow a lino carving tool to use at home.
This class is designed for beginners, but intermediate-level printmakers are welcome, too! Lena holds an M.F.A. degree in Printmaking, and xé has taught printmaking at all levels, including advanced courses at Michigan State University and College for Creative Studies. Xé loves helping students troubleshoot interesting projects and technical processes.
Have some prior experience with other types of printmaking? This class can support creating and printing woodcuts, Pronto/polyester plate lithos, and copper-plate drypoints - if you bring the tools and materials. We can print pre-existing etching/aquatint/mezzotint plates if you have them, but we don't have the capacity to etch new plates in this class. Press accommodates a maximum paper size of 12" x 24".
